Hey everybody this is Tim McKean in the
eLearning department, and today I have a double preview for this week’s video.
This week I’m going to talk to you about a session that I’m going to do about
using podcasts for professional development called PD Anywhere. If you’ve
never heard of podcasting, podcasting came around about 2004 when the internet
finally got fast enough to be able to support high-quality video and audio, and
the ability to subscribe to content for automatic delivery to your computer. Now
a decade and a half later that still really hasn’t caught on, and it’s mostly
been overshadowed by the social networks. But I think podcasts are one of the
greatest things on the Internet. This is a great tool for teachers. You can find
shows on teaching and learning, on your specific subject matter, or maybe the
technologies that you’re using in class… or just find shows on something you’re
interested in outside of class, maybe your favorite TV show or hobby. In this
session I’m going to show you how to search for podcasts, how to subscribe to
them on your computer, tablet, or even right on your smartphone. And just like
your DVR on your TV at home, new episodes will download automatically so
you don’t have to go looking for them every time – and you’ll always have
something great to watch or listen to. If you’d like to get started exploring
podcast now here’s one to try. This is the Teaching Online Podcast or TOPCast.
I’ll put a link in the YouTube description and in the email newsletter.
This is a show about online teaching and learning produced from the Center for
Distributed Learning at the University of Central Florida. And in fact – and this
is why it’s a double preview this week – the hosts of the show, Tom Cavanagh and
Kelvin Thompson, will be joining us virtually at the eLearning Academy as a
featured presentation. So if you want to get to know a little bit more about Tom
and Kelvin go check out TOPcast. The recent episode on Humanizing Online
Learning is great. Get yourself registered for the Academy if you
haven’t already, and stay all the way to the end and come see me at my session
called PD Anywhere: Using Podcasts and Online Video as Professional Development.
