Bonjour, mon ami. Je m’appelle Emile Durkheim. I was born in France in 1858 and studied Comte’s
work from the previous era. I am famous for my theoretical works surrounding
structural functionalism, though I too believed in the importance of scientific objectivity,
empiricism, and morality. I focused mainly on studying large-scale social
structures, how they all serve a purpose, and influence us all. Those of us who feel disconnected from these
structures, are experiencing anomie. The goal of the sociologist is to discover,
not invent, and I’ve influenced many. However, when I lost my son in the war, I
lost myself as well, and died in 1917.
